Why Shamrock?
Sonia and I have been intrigued with the idea of doing something with this emblematic symbol of Irishness for many years. As is our wont with STABLE we love to look at our Irishness with fresh eyes and challenge the way we think. What might typically spring to mind when mentioning Shamrock is St Patrick’s day.
A stylised green emblem, a cartoon kitsch, kiss me quick, a touristy symbol of Irishness. We wanted to give it back some style!
The shamrock is a small and beautiful 3 leafed delicate native Irish plant, growing all over the Island, resilient and discreet, beautiful and simple.
For our STABLE Shamrock project, Sonia and I both wanted the Shamrock to be presented in a fresh new way. We have been playing with versions and ideas on what we might do in various forms and materials over the last 3 years and it's been interesting to research. In order to create the textile patterns, we worked with our dear friend, textile designer and creative soul, Peter Wescott and our wish/brief was to play with the shamrock shapes to develop repeatable prints that we could adapt to different forms. All the while the brief was to do this with confidence, style, elegance and fun!
The final patterns we progressed with Peter are gorgeous and his eye and understanding of what we wanted to achieve was invaluable.
Pattern 1 is a large abstract stylised Shamrock pattern.
Pattern 2 is a small repeat Shamrock pattern.
For the Abstract large we added a fun reference to linen weaving as a background to add detail. We chose Crepe back Satin Silk as our fabric of choice for it’s luxuriousness and lightness for summer wear. The colours selected were also based on our own favourites these days and we added contrasting stripes to give more visual playfulness and structure for us to work with for the 3 piece garment patterns.
The dress pattern was all about the generosity and elegance, based on a kaftan style, it is comfortable to wear open or belted. The Top is basically a short version of the dress, the skirt is Aline shape with an elasticated waist to wear on the waist or lower on the hips. Belts double up as scarves or headbands.
We are so happy with the results!
History of the Shamrock
The shamrock first came to light, it is said, because the simple 3 leaf form was used as a tool for explaining the christian Holy Trinity by St Patrick in his teachings around the 5th century AD, was made famous in the United States by Irish immigrants.
The plant was worn on St Patrick's day to celebrate the national saint and as it did not grow in the US, Irish people made do with drawn or sewn green versions of the shamrock leaf. It became a symbol of being Irish in itself. And so as the leaf became the symbol, the brands caught on and it became part of an Irish identity. Aer Lingus, the national Irish airline in the 1960’s, cemented this by using the Shamrock as its logo and still does to this day.
