    The Story of STABLE

STABLE was founded in 2013 by Francie Duff and Sonia Reynolds, with a single question in mind: where does someone in Dublin find Irish linen, Donegal tweed, and Aran knitwear that is genuinely Irish, genuinely made, and worth keeping for a lifetime?

That question became a shop. The boutique at 2 Westbury Mall, Balfe Street — just off Grafton Street — opened as a place where the Irish materials Francie and Sonia believed in could be seen, handled, and bought by people who understood what they were looking at. Over a decade on, it remains exactly that.

Both Francie and Sonia design all the collections and still work on the shop floor regularly. When you visit, you may find yourself talking to one of the people who chose everything on the shelves, who knows the maker of the scarf you are considering, and who can tell you, without consulting a label, exactly where the cloth was woven and by whom. It is a different experience from most retail. It is also the point of the place.

STABLE was named Image PWC Creative Businesswoman of the Year 2026, and has won the Irish Design Award in 2024 and 2025. These recognitions matter less than what they represent: a business built on knowing Irish craft, respecting the people who make it, and finding customers who feel the same.

    What Our Customers Say

    ★★★★★

A visit to STABLE is now part of her itinerary on her upcoming trip to Ireland. I purchased a scarf as a gift for a friend — she already has it and won't take it off.

I tried it on at the shop in Dublin and loved it so much that I had to get it straight away. I wear it almost every day, and it's so great for any occasion.

    ★★★★★

When I went to the shop while visiting, I was so impressed with the quality. I didn't end up buying anything while there, but couldn't stop thinking about it — so I ordered online and was thrilled at how efficiently it arrived.

    Irish Linen in Dublin

Irish Linen — Then and Now

Irish linen has been part of Irish life for over a thousand years. The conditions that made it exceptional — a temperate climate, soft rainfall, and long-stalked flax that grows well in the fields of Ulster — are particular to this island. In the nineteenth century, the mills of Belfast made linen so central to the city's identity that it became known as Linenopolis: a place that clothed much of the world in Irish cloth.

That industry contracted sharply in the twentieth century. But the knowledge, the craft, and the qualities that made Irish linen worth making never fully disappeared. The mills that survived — fewer now, but working — still produce a cloth with a character no synthetic has replicated: weight that breathes in summer, texture that softens with washing without losing its substance, a natural lustre that comes from the fibre itself.

STABLE has been designing and working with Irish linen since the beginning back in 2013. It was always at the centre of what Francie and Sonia set out to do — to find the Irish materials that were genuinely worth keeping and give them a place where they could be seen and owned by people who would value them. The scarves, throws, and accessories in the Dublin store come from makers with a direct connection to that tradition.

The full story of Irish linen — its history, its qualities, and what it means to wear it today — is told in The STABLE Story of Irish Linen, a series of pieces written from inside the craft.
