Meet the Irish weavers, knitters and makers behind STABLE of Ireland — hand-sewn in our own Dublin studio, from thread to shop floor.

Every STABLE piece that Francie & Sonia bring to market passes through the hands of a maker before it reaches you — a weaver in Donegal, a knitter on the Aran Islands, a seamstress in our own Dublin studio. Craftsmanship isn't a finishing touch at STABLE; it's the whole point. Here's who makes what we sell, and how.

Ireland's Excellence in Textile Production

Ireland has a thriving industry in textile weaving, both North and South. Our little island became a world centre of excellence in the production of linen for domestic and commercial use — from the finest luxury damask used by the royal households of Europe, to international airplane upholstery prized for its durability. Our wool and tweed weaving are equally highly regarded, the quality of both hand-woven tweeds and machine-woven fabrics second to none. At STABLE of Ireland, we work closely with many of this country's most talented weavers, several of whom produce exclusively for us. We get to explore different techniques and create pieces from the endless possibilities presented by colour, yarn type, thread weight and pattern. There is nothing we enjoy more than the time we spend with our weavers.

Championing and Collaborating with Irish Weavers

The friendships we have built with our weavers and knitters are the heart and soul of everything we do and make. There is considerable time, thought and care invested in every scarf and textile that carries the STABLE name. We are proud of what we have collaboratively achieved — championing Irish-made textiles and creating a fresh take on wearable and home Irish linen and wool accessories.

Our Dublin Studio: Where Craft Meets the Street

Alongside the weavers and knitters we work with across the island, STABLE has its own production studio in central Dublin, where many of our pieces are cut and hand-sewn before being carried on foot to our shop off Grafton Street. It's craftsmanship you can trace to a specific street, by a specific team — a collective of talented, multi-generational seamstresses who've chosen Dublin as home.

Meet Some of Our STABLE of Ireland Makers

STABLE now works with around 30 producers across Ireland. A few of the collaborations behind the pieces you'll find in the shop:

Eddie Doherty, Donegal — the hand-weaver behind STABLE's original 2013 herringbone scarf, still a signature technique today.

Molloy & Studio Donegal, Ardara, Co. Donegal — cloth and Donegal tweed weavers who create the rare fabrics used in STABLE's statement blankets, coats and gilets, some finished by couturier Peter O'Brien.

Catherine McCann, Co. Wicklow — breeder of a flock of Romney sheep, whose exceptionally soft fleece is spun into the yarn for STABLE's Wicklow wool cloth.

Pauline Hogan, Mullingar — basket maker trained under Joe Hogan, whose exquisite woven forms sit alongside STABLE's homeware collection.

Brian Walsh, Co. Wicklow — specialist wood-turner behind STABLE's oak, walnut and chestnut stools and furniture using naturally fallen wood from across Ireland.

Linen weavers across Ireland — including Emblem in Wexford and Fergusons in Northern Ireland — who weave STABLE's linen on Irish looms.

The Irish Design and Craft Techniques We Champion at STABLE of Ireland

Donegal Tweed — handwoven on the island's oldest working looms, a heavy-gauge fleck tweed used in STABLE's gilets, coats and jackets. Donegal Tweed is currently seeking Protected Geographical Status from the EU, the same protection given to Champagne.

Aran Knitting — the cable and honeycomb stitches historically knitted into Aran sweaters, each pattern carrying meaning passed down through generations of island knitters.

Crios Weaving — the traditional woven belt of the Aran Islands, reimagined by STABLE in scarves and accessories and beautifully hand woven by Liz Christy.

Irish Linen Weaving — flax woven on Irish looms into fabric that's anti-bacterial, breathable and — with the right care — gets better with age (see our Textile Care Guide).
